Technology Advisory Council Meeting Minutes - April 2, 2004
Attendees: Bob McGowan, Jim Monaghan, Steve Cuddigan, Mike Ross, Kurt Collins, Ramiro, DiazGranados, Ian Jacobs, Javier Torner, Tony Coulson, Owen Owens, Bill Takehara, Dick Botting
Chad Cordero did a presentation on iPlanet's Sun 1 Calendar Express program. This would replace Meeting Maker as the campus' calendaring program. One major advantage is that everyone who has an email address on campus would also have a calendar account. People need to login for the first time to iPlanet's program to activate their calendar account. Their login info is the same as their email login. Discussion followed for when support for Meeting Maker would be officially terminated. 6 months is considered sufficient time for migration to the new program. A motion was made to move the campus to iPlanet's Calendar Express with the Help Desk support ending on June 30, 2004 and on August 31, 2004 the server will be terminated. There will be no more training for Meeting Maker. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Educational TechnologiesA couple of handouts were passed out - the testimony of Dr. Carol A. Twigg to the Committee on Education and the Workforce Subcommittee on 21st Century Competitiveness and a list of recommendations to the Provost. A discussion on Educational Technologies' efficacy ensued. How technology is used is the challenge and what steps are needed to enable students to be more technologically savvy are two issues. This would be sold to the campus in degrees with a focus on improved student outputs while teaching more students and lightening the faculty's load. Utilizing speakers enlighten people and getting the President's buy-in is necessary, however, BATS needs to do research first. Increasing the number of buildings or to graduate students is a question that needs to be addressed. Technology enables a major shift in the college environment to virtual classrooms. BATS general thought is that the efficacy of education technologies findings an issue that BATS should address.
Technology Advisory Council believes, after reviewing the Congressional report, that courses exist on campus where informed use of technology leads to improved outcomes and cost savings without increasing faculty workload by intelligent redesign of the courses. It would be advantageous to identify core courses for such redesign. The Committee unanimously agreed.
