Technology Advisory Committee Meeting
- March 17, 2006
Present: Lisa Bartle, Kurt Collins, Ian Jacobs, Jim Monoghan, Jim O’linger (for Bill Takehara), Jason Riemer, Mike Ross, Joe Scarcella, Javier Torner (for Lorraine Frost), David Turner.
Welcome & Introductions – Results from March 3 Meeting:
Discussion regarding Tech Group and how they will form their subcommittee group under TAC.
We also want to make sure that information is relayed back to ATAC.
IRT VP Report:
ATAC committee tentatively endorsed the laptop initiative and will recommend it to the Provost provided that some additional requirements are met.
Laptop Initiative:
Report tabled to the next TAC meeting to await results from Faculty Senate meeting on Tuesday, April 4, 2006
E-mail Policy Initiative:
There are some policy issues that need to be addressed. Ian concerned about life expectancy of email. For example, Chancellor’s Office, has asked us to define thoroughly retention policies. Some information has to be obtained for 7 years.
Clicker Presentation Tabled Discussion:
Jim Monoghan suggested that the next step for clickers would be a competitive bid process. We need to gather information so we can leverage buying power of multiple courses that are doing it. Professors could give proposals. Once we receive information, TAC would be in a good position to endorse this. Jason asked if we could select a vendor without really knowing what we want to leverage, however, Jim M. said we could negotiate this. One concern is that there has been a lot of consolidation in the publishing industry – if we pick McGraw Hill it may not be conducive to another professor’s syllabus. Jason said that a professor could have a Thompson-Wiett textbook but still be able to use a McGraw Hill clicker. Next step is that Jason will get bids and Joe recommended that it go to the chair for the Teaching and Learning subcommittee.
Committee & Subcommittee Reports:
Technical Support and Coordination - Ian reported that the techs are working on minimal recommendations for computers on campus. Javier reported that San Diego State University is in the process of finalizing a contract with SANS to get SANS-EDU security training for technicians. The cost of training will be $1500 which includes lodging. The training course will lead to professional certification in security for Windows. An announcement will come out of the division once the contract is signed.
Other Business:
Steve Cuddigan updated TAC on the status of the tech group. The tech steering committee is in the process of drafting a charter. Steve will send the draft document to the TAC list serv. The tech steering committee will be a working group of TAC under Technical Support & Coordination. Discussion regarding chain of command – will tech group suggestions go to TAC and then to ATAC. The two councils are not hierarchical - ATAC will focus more on academic technology. Joe had a concern about where TAC can make recommendations to tech group since techs all work for different individuals on campus. Javier suggested that if the tech group wants to represent the entire university, then they need to include people from all segments of the university – needs to be diverse and need to provide avenues for feedback from everyone on campus. Joe suggested that maybe the University Systems and Infrastructure sub-committee can help tech group develop charter that is interrelated to TAC handbook. Charter will be tabled until the next TAC meeting.
ATAC is the Academic Technology Advisory Committee is an advisory committee to the Provost that was formed at the request of a CSU directive. It will be an advisory committee to the Provost.
Javier would like for TAC to start addressing issues that may arise from new California privacy laws and how faculty/staff will be affected by implementation of these policies. The Chancellor’s office will be issuing an executive order regarding these new privacy laws.
