Technology Advisory Council Meeting Minutes - Friday, March 15, 2002
Attendees: Carolyn Aldana, Jim Monaghan, Javier Torner, Kim Cousins, Mike Ross, Don McKenzie, Thinh Ly (rep for Joe Scarcella), Bill Takehara, Kurt Collins, Ian Jacobs
Status of Workstation Purchases - The orders
from the Library, College of Education and College of Natural Science
have been turned in. The discussion briefly touched upon a problem
that came up regarding zip drives vs. cd-rw and the observation
was made to rethink setting a standard on peripherals.
Status of Portable Lab Purchase - Discussion
included who was going to be responsible for the equipment, what
would be an effective way to get the word out, optional vendors
available for the carts and the advantages/disadvantages. The College
of Arts and Letters offered to handle the portable lab pilot and
the Committee agreed to this offer. The lab would include: 2 carts,
2 printers, 2 bay stations and 25 machines although, there was some
questions regarding maintenance and the necessity for the printers.
Arts and Letters will be looking for a cart that hold more than
15 machines and they plan to require feedback on the lab via a questionnaire.
Also, a drivers license would be required for checkout of one of
the wireless laptop computers in the classroom when a lab is being
used.
Another way to make the faculty aware of the portable
lab was for the BATS Reps to go back to their Colleges and bring
back their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. A suggestion was to make the
portable lab available for the Technology Fair.
Another thought was to use wireless technology for
the Temporary Classrooms to enable network access.
Minutes - The minutes from February 15, 2002
and March 1, 2002 were reviewed. A motion was made to accept the
minutes and the motion passed unanimously.
Note - It was recognized that an annual report
would go through TAC because BATS is a subcommittee of that Council.
Student Workstation Purchase - The update
given stated that the ASI Committee had met and there is to be vendor
presentation on April by IBM, Dell and Apple. A decision will be
between Dell and IBM as to the exclusive student vendor. Apple and
the winning vendor will be present at the Technology Fair. Also,
the students will be receiving direct mailers regarding the student
purchase program. A web site will be established for purchase and
information. The student machines will come preloaded with CSUSB
as the homepage and wallpaper logo and installed with Microsoft's
Office Suite and McAfee Virus software. The savings will be from
5% - 13%. Key student rep from various clubs and organizations have
been invited to attend the vendor presentation.
Technology Fair - May 14 is the date set
for the Technology Fair and several vendors have said they will
attend. The goal for the Fair is to demonstrate how to use technology
in education. The Technology Fair Committee is looking for contact
for a PDA vendor to invite.
BATS Student Survey Results - Copies of the
results were passed out. The question posed was who is to evaluate
the survey. It was generally agreed that the Committee should probably
evaluate the responses. Light study of the survey spotted that better
training and education in the area of technology is necessary to
better prepare the CSUSB students for the real world. Discussion
revolved around the necessity of making computer training a mandatory
class something which was akin to information and technology literacy.
BATS recommends that a class for computer training
become a part of a student's general education.
BATS desires to emphasize the following issues.
1. Individual student purchase of computers
2. Citrix/Application server solution
3. Student training in computer literacy
The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 pm. The next meeting
will be Friday, April 5, 2002 in PL-002.
