BATS Meeting Minutes March 7, 2003

Computer purchases v. 2003
Report on CITRIX NAS (network attached storage)

Discussion of topics brought up in ATAC and the interaction with BATS mission.

Cart computers for Palm Desert campus

Motion ?Motion to allocate an amount not to exceed $1000 to purchase a NAS for testing on the CITRIX initiative.

Motion passed

Discussion of software standardization for academic labs
Motion - Survey the campus to come up with a consensus as to what version to use for the following software packages.

?Office suite

?scientific word processing

?image process

?GIS

?Statistical Software

?CAD software

?Page layout

?web software

Additional software types to be revisited annually.
Survey to be conducted and analyzed so we can make a recommendation by May 2.

Motion passed

Survey to be developed by Jim and distributed by Jim. 

Palm Desert campus wants to get a mobile computer cart.  Can this be an extension of the mobile lab initiative?

Motion - Move the computer cart still being used as a test cart to the Palm Desert Campus for the Spring Quarter to continue the test.

Motion passed

The committee selected the VA cart because it is not a central campus resource.

Motion Passed

Javier is going to contact Dave Hatch to have Dave check the wireless network to determine if the wireless connections on the cart computers can be used without interfering with existing networks at the Palm Desert campus.

First Item for next meeting, a document from the Technology Advisory Council stating that we no longer believe the automatic replacement of computers makes sense for the campus and alternative solution need to be found.

Motion ?Technology Advisory Council adopts the position that we no longer believe the automatic replacement of computers makes sense for the campus and alternative solution(s) need to be found.
