Technology Advisory Committee Meeting - February 17, 2006

Present: Lisa Bartle, Kurt Collins, Tony Coulson, Ian Jacobs, Bob McGowan, Jim Monaghan, David Randolph, Jason Reimer, Mike Ross, Bill Takehara, Joe Scarcella

Welcome and Overview: Joe announced that he will not be able to attend the next TAC meeting

IRT VP Report: Lorraine at ITAC meeting – nothing new to report

Clicker Presentation: Representatives from McGraw Hill presented on clickers. The presentation showed how to create questions and run grade reports using clicker technology. In addition:

  • Clickers use a radio frequency and they have taken precautions so frequency won’t interfere with other classes.
  • Clicker grade book can be exported to BlackBoard, WebCT, eCollege, etc.
  • Concern that students could cheat if they have two clickers – representatives indicated that some professors will put in their syllabus that if a student has more than one clicker, it will be considered cheating.
  • No cost to school or instructor – cost to student is $12 per quarter/semester. Once the class has ended, the clicker gets deactivated.
  • Online component is not available yet – McGraw Hill is currently working on it.
  • Instructors can import questions from a Word format type of document.

Lisa suggested that we invite faculty who are currently using clicker technology to a TAC meeting to see how valuable it might be in the classroom.

Committee and Sub-Committee Report: Nothing new to report.

Other Business: San Jose Laptop Implementation Concept Paper Report:

Bob would like to table the laptop initiative report until the March 3rd meeting. He wants to meet with the Financial Aid office to see how they can participate in the laptop initiative.

Jim was concerned that students buy things that faculty don’t use. Kurt indicated that a program will not be given a laptop if they haven’t changed their curriculum to integrate technology. It’s a different approach to how they want to integrate this. The initiative needs to come from the top-down. At San Jose State University, it was the President’s idea for a laptop initiative. Bob indicated that President Karnig’s thoughts on this initiative would depend on how well the pilot program does. Ian was concerned that some faculty may not want to adjust their courses.

Other items noted for the laptop initiative:

  • Bid process by departments/programs
  • Only juniors, seniors and grad students
  • Computers in labs sometimes don’t have the capabilities or software that students need
  • Concern that initiative might backfire due to lower income students in Inland Empire.
  • Students will need an additional $2000 in eligibility for Financial Aid. However, Financial Aid isn’t a deal breaker for initiative.
