TAC Committee Meeting – February 11, 2005
Attendees: Joe Scarcella, Richard Botting, Owen Owens, Jason Reimer, Jim Monaghan, Mike Ross, Steve Cuddigan, Ian Jacobs, William Aguilar, Kurt Collins, Ramiro DiazGranados and David Randolph (student visitor)
uPortal Presentation – Dick Botting and David Randolph (computer science student), gave an overview of a customizable portal by the campus and by the student. Customization includes changing the formatting and content. Though it is freeware, the product requires manpower resources to prepare it for use. The product is being widely used by universities nationwide with large FTES. It integrates with existing systems to provide content and information.
It is recommended that a comparison be drawn between the Peoplesoft portal, which the campus already has, and the uPortal freeware product by Ja-Sig. TAC agreed to
Computer Platform Adoption - Though response from techs was not good and support from Dell is still good. The techs generally agreed to stay with Dell. Periodic assessment of Dell as a vendor is still important. It was suggested to have a student lab supplied with a mix of machines to be an evaluation environment so that future vendors would come in with 10 machines for evaluation purposes instead of a “dog and pony” show.
Joe Scarcella and Mike Ross are to contact Gateway about obtaining some more computers and a couple servers.
Standardization of Systems - More research needs to be done. Ramiro and Owen to continue researching. To aide in clarification if a vendor is not supporting a program then there is no reason the campus should support it.
FAQ's for TAC – suggest that the colleges be polled for what questions they have for TAC.
Other Business – A request for TAC to sponsor a server that will be for campus clubs under strict guidelines. Who is to sponsor this - manpower and equipment? There are sites that offer these serves already. Question is: what resources should be provided for clubs which are a part of the University community?
The meeting closed at 2:35 pm and the next meeting will be on Friday, February 28, 2005 at 1:00 pm in ACM's conference room PL-002.
